My wife, Karin, and I were together for 31 years. On New Year’s Eve, 2019 I lost her to metastatic breast cancer. Three months after she died, I sold everything, bought a tasteful little RV, took her Dachshund, and set out to revisit places we liked, and places we wanted to visit but couldn’t because she was too weak. Over the last nine months, I crisscrossed the country and had numerous conversations with Karin, both in my head and out loud. And all the while, I felt hollow and alone.
